Companies use phone interviews to screen candidates before bringing them on site for an in-person interview. Phone interviews can be tricky since you cannot see the employer(s) and pick up on their body language or non-verbal cues.
With the right preparation and practice, you can feel more confident in your ability to interview over the phone. Here are some tips:
BEFORE THE INTERVIEW:
- Research the company, know why you want to work there, and what you have to offer.
- Be able to speak about your qualifications and experiences in relation to the position.
- Prepare 3-5 questions for the interviewer(s).
- Review the Interview Guide and Phone Interview Tips on the Career Services' website. Schedule a mock interview with Career Services - mock interviews can be done over the phone.
DURING THE INTERVIEW:
- Dress up and either sit or stand. You'll feel more confident vs. doing a phone interview while laying bed in your pajamas.
- Make sure you are in a quiet place without interruptions and have reliable service if you are using a cell phone.
- If you're having trouble hearing or understanding the interviewers, politely tell them.
- Write down the name(s) of the interviewer(s).
- Speak slowly and clearly. Don't forget to breathe and smile!
- Have your resume, the job description, and company's website in front of you.
- If your answer has multiple parts, let the interviewer(s) know. For example: There are 3 main reasons why I think I would be a good fit for this position. First...Second...and Lastly... This will keep your answer on-track and let the interviewer(s) know when you are finished talking.
AFTER THE INTERVIEW:
- Always follow-up with a thank-you note within 24 hours. Email is acceptable. A good thank-you note is free of errors, personalized, and professional in its tone.
