Career Services spoke with Gwynedd-Mercy College student, Colin Tosti. He discusses what he has been doing to prepare for life after graduation this upcoming May.
Tell our readers a little about yourself.
My name is Colin Tosti. I am senior Business Education major and will be graduating May 2011. I have attended Gwynedd for all four years of my college career and have enjoyed every minute of it.
What have you been doing to get ready for life after graduation?
The college has great resources for students to prepare them for the professional, working world. While at Gwynedd I was consistently looking into and attending numerous events and activities, such as job fairs and volunteer experiences to help prepare me as a professional.
I also took advantage of utilizing Gwynedd’s Career Services department, which helps students prepare resumes and portfolios. They also provide interview tips and much more.
What sort of materials have you included in your portfolio?
Career Services helped me prepare my portfolio and my resume. A few sections of my portfolio include: accomplishments, clearances, pictures and examples of my work. Career Services also helped me with my resume. I had no idea where to begin with my resume, so I went to Career Services and they were able to help me create a strong resume.
What was the hardest part about writing a resume?
One of the hardest parts in creating a resume is maintaining a consistent format. I reviewed the sample resumes that Career Services provides on their website and also scheduled an appointment to go over it with a staff member.
Do you have any advice for other GMC students?
Do not be afraid to ask for help. Take advantage of Career Services, the Academic Resource Center, and maintain strong relationships with your professors. All of those things will help you succeed after graduation. The biggest key to getting a job is who you know. Meet people in your field and network.
