Choosing a major is a big decision, which is why it’s important to take your time and really consider all of your options. Whether you are choosing a major for the first time, or thinking about switching majors, keep these things in mind while you work through this decision-making process:
1. Be thoughtful and do your research. The more information you have about yourself and your options, the more confident you can be in your decision:
- Assess your skills, interests, personality and values.
- Gather information about the different majors at GMC and talk to professors and current students in programs of interest to you.
- Explore career fields. While you may not know exactly what you want to do after graduation (which is okay), but having a general idea or a few possible options is a great place to start.
3. It’s okay to be unsure (for now) – use your indecision to fuel your research: “I don’t know right now, but I’m going to work hard to narrow down my options.”
4. Take advantage of the resources available to you through the Career Services office:
- Individual career counseling appointments.
- Career Exploration section of the Career Services website outlines this process and provides helpful links to resources that will assist with your research.
- Self-assessment inventories available on the website and to be taken and discussed with a Career Services staff member.
