Choosing a Major

Choosing a major is a big decision, which is why it’s important to take your time and really consider all of your options. Whether you are choosing a major for the first time, or thinking about switching majors, keep these things in mind while you work through this decision-making process:

1. Be thoughtful and do your research. The more information you have about yourself and your options, the more confident you can be in your decision:
  • Assess your skills, interests, personality and values.
  • Gather information about the different majors at GMC and talk to professors and current students in programs of interest to you.
  • Explore career fields. While you may not know exactly what you want to do after graduation (which is okay), but having a general idea or a few possible options is a great place to start.
2. Take it one step at a time. It’s hard to think about possible career options if you don’t know what you are interested in or what talents you can bring to the table.

3. It’s okay to be unsure (for now) – use your indecision to fuel your research: “I don’t know right now, but I’m going to work hard to narrow down my options.”

4. Take advantage of the resources available to you through the Career Services office:
  • Individual career counseling appointments.
  • Career Exploration section of the Career Services website outlines this process and provides helpful links to resources that will assist with your research.
  • Self-assessment inventories available on the website and to be taken and discussed with a Career Services staff member.
