It never feels good to be rejected. It can be even more disheartening when you are rejected from something in which you put time, energy and money into. However, when facing rejection in the job searching process, it is important to keep in mind a few things to ensure that you learn from the experience so you can better yourself for the next opportunity.
First, don’t take rejection personally. The employers don’t know you and aren’t turning you down because they don’t like you or think you are a bad person. Keep in mind they have lots of potential candidates and they simply cannot hire everyone.
Use this experience to make adjustments where necessary. Check to make sure your resume is perfect and error-free. Also, ask a friend, family member or the Career Services center to work with you to sharpen your interviewing skills. Have them conduct a mock interview with you and take note of areas where you can make improvements.
Finally, keep in touch with the employers. After the interview, email and thank them for taking the time to meet with you and ask where they felt you could make improvements. By keeping the lines of communication open, you can stay on top of any new openings for volunteer positions or internships and make yourself visible to the company. Use the rejection as a tool for making yourself more desirable for the next opportunity!
